Capture means to remove from the board stones which have no remaining liberties, according to the rule of capture. Captured stones are called prisoners or captives.

The English term "capture" (and Japanese toru) can also refer to immobilizing a stone, such as in a ladder, loose ladder, or geta, or killing stones, making them dead (dead stones). See killing versus capturing.
