Kim Dayoung KBA

Kim Dayoung (or Dayeong in Revised Romanization, but less intuitive for English speakers to pronounce more or less correctly; Hangul: 김다영 (金多瑛, born 14 March 1998) is a Korean female professional 5 dan. As of 2024-09-05, she is the [ext] #25 ranked female in the world and #7 female in Korea.

Not to be confused with Kim Daeyoung.

She is the eldest daughter of Kim Sung-Rae and his wife Lee So-yoon who also taught baduk for many years, and younger sister of Kim Chaeyeong. They are the first Korean family with three professionals.

Dayoung became a pro aged 17. Her other teacher was Han Jong-jin, at the Han Jong-jin Baduk School.

Name

Her given name Da-yeong/다영/多瑛 is the combination of Da/다/多 meaning many, abundant; and yeong/영/瑛 character, meaning “crystal”, “shining gemstone”, or “lustrous jade”. So her name means “abundant brilliance”, “plentiful shining gems”, or “great radiance”.

Her older sister Chae-yeong/채영/彩瑛 has the same last character in her name. But the first character Chae/채/彩/ means “colour” or “to pick/gather”. So her name means “Radiant crystal” or "Colourful gem”. Sharing a character is common in Korean and Chinese families, often a generational name, albeit usually the first character.
