As of template
Usage
{{as of|year|month|day|cap=true}}
The "month", "day", and "cap" parameters are optional.
Purpose
The as of template is meant to indicate information that may need updating in the future. Using terms like "currently", "now" or "as of today" may lead to out of date information as time passes. For example:
- Lee Changho currently holds three major international titles.
This sentence is unlikely to remain true as time passes, and will need updating as title matches are played. The reader, however, has no indication on how old the statement is, or whether it is still true.
Instead, using "as of":
- Lee Changho holds three major international titles as of June 2001.
This is better, now the reader is informed of the point in time this information was current. If a reader encounters this sentence in 2009, he will be aware that it is unlikely to still be accurate.
And this is where the as of template comes into play. Using the template, the above becomes:
- Lee Changho holds six major international titles {{as of|2001|June}}.
Which, with template replacement, becomes:
- Lee Changho holds six major international titles as of June 2001.
But this time, with the added benefit that we can easily find such occurrences of "as of" using the template search mechanism (see below).
The template has an additional argument "cap", which can be set when the statement occurs at the start of a sentence, so that "As" will be capitalized. For example:
- {{As of|2001|June|cap=true}}, Lee Changho holds three major international titles.
results in:
- As of June 2001, Lee Changho holds three major international titles.
Example with the day parameter defined:
- As of 1 June 2001, Lee Changho holds three major international titles.
