Outside Liberties

    Keywords: Tactics, Go term

Chinese: 外气 (wai4 qi4)
Japanese: 外ダメ (sotodame)
Korean: -

In a capturing race, the outside liberties of a group are the liberties in regions adjacent to the group, not surrounded by his groups of the capuring race and not adjacent to any opposing group of it. Outside liberties are also known, in English, as external liberties. In the diagram below, the points marked with a circle are outside liberties of the surrounded black stones; the points marked with a square are outside liberties of the surrounded white stones.

Even if white goes first, black will win the capture race.
