Macro Endgame
The term ‘macroendgame’ is used in The Endgame by Ogawa and Davies for the early phase of the endgame when plays are large. The term ‘Oyose’ can refer to such a large play, or to the macroendgame itself.
It is often a tense time, since individual plays are very big (say in the range 15 – 20 points deiri) while sente / gote relationships can be quite unclear and may depend on serious amounts of reading. Thick plays in the endgame can still work well at this juncture.
Otake Hideo has often shown his great strength by whole-board attacks during this part of the game.
