Shimamura Toshihiro
Shimamura Toshihiro (島村俊廣, 1912-1991) was a Nihon Ki-in professional Go player. He achieved the rank of 9-dan in 1960. He won 15 titles ( http://gobase.org/studying/articles/matthews/fuseki/07/) including the Oza in 1957, the Tengen in 1977. He won the Tokyo Shinbun Cup in 1959 and 1963, the Saikodansha in 1952 and 1954, the NHK Cup in 1954 and the Okan Tournament 8 times. He was a very good endgame player with a patient style.
He changed kanjis used in his name three times: originally 利博, then 俊宏, next 俊広 and finally 俊廣, creating a nightmare for go journalists. Fortunately for us, all are read Toshihiro.
His pupils were Hane Yasumasa, Yamashiro Hiroshi, Nakano Hironari, Imamura Yoshiaki, Shimamura Michihiro (his son), Shigeno Yuki, and Matsumoto Nayoko.
Innovator of the Shimamura Formation.
