Segoe Tsumego Dictionary
Tsumego Jiten 詰碁辞典 by Segoe Kensaku.
Old, out-of-print dictionary of tsumego.
First printed 1954.
Red cardboard slipcase holding two thin paperbacks.
1. Problem diagrams.
2. Answers. Note there are no diagrams for the answers. Just a list of moves in old-style Japanese notation.
Contains 1000 problems, each with a keyword title and a grade (A, B, C). Many look to be standard well-known ones. There is a good section of 70 problems on ishi no shita.
jst - I bought a copy of this classic work in 1970, I rather like this book. Firstly the answers are in a separate volume, so you can't just turn the page and cheat. Note - there are only 950 problems graded (A,B, C), there are then 15 ungraded problems of chosei, 1 of a double headed dragon the remaining 34 diagrams are examples of double headed dragon double ko triple ko and mannen ko
Secondly - The book starts with a 16 page introduction to the 29 categories of tsume-go which Segoe uses, the 30th category is of reference positions. Thirdly there are quite a few tsume-go in this book that I wouldn't consider analysing in an actual game.
Two of the more interesting categories are
- Carpenter's square - 40 problems. The basic position is a B grade, 27 of the problems are A grade.
- Non-suji suji - Fu (不) Suji (筋) - 15 problems. The kanji used for non is "fu" - there are a few times when the apparent bad move is the correct move.
