In literature and game discussions one can often find the expression Modern Go. The qualification modern can have many meanings:
- It can be used to make the distinction between the old era of the Go houses and the current practice of professional Go.
- More often, it emphasizes the ceasure between the old style of play and the new fuseki exemplified by innovators Kitani Minoru and Go Seigen, with the shift from territorial thinking towards rapid development and the related rise in popularity of the 4-4 point.
- Ironically, it has also been used to mark the advent of the Korean professionals, who have revolutionized Go again, back to territorial thinking but sticking with the 4-4 point as an important asset in the opening.
- Less common would be the usage of modern to denote the presence of computers, Go Servers and the Internet.
