Surrounding things is the central tenet in the game of Go. In fact, the 围 (wi) in 围棋 (wiq), the Chinese name for Go, means surround.

Black surrounds six points of territory.  

Firstly, the objective of Go is to surround more territory than your opponent.

The surrounded black stone is captured.  

Secondly, you can surround your opponent's stones to capture them, provided that the surrounded stones cannot form a living group.

An important strategic principle is to surround in sente.
