Family and early Go/Baduk career
She was born in Seoul on 2 May 2008 to Choi Won-seo and Song Ho-jeong, and is their eldest daughter. Her Baduk instructors were Park Byeongkyu 9p, Lee Chun-gyu 7p, Baek Chan-hee and Choi Gwang-ho 5p. Her favourite player is Lee Chang-ho 9p.
When she was only 9, she won the 2017 Hanwha Life Cup Women’s Lower Grade Division. Next year she won it again.
When she finally qualified as a pro aged 15, she said:
“There was a moment when I started to think about joining the dan while playing the national team (i.e. became a professional). I tried to focus so as not to let my guard down until the end, but now that it’s over, I can finally feel that I’ve joined the pro dan. I failed the national team to decide on joining last year, but my parents believed in me until the end and instilled in me the belief in myself that I was able to come this far. I’m also grateful to the instructors at the dojo who found a study method that suits me and helped me in every way.
