It was stated at usually the proverb play on the point of symmetry applies, but on this page the number of problems where the proverb applies and the number of problems where the proverb does not apply is about equal. The most likely reason is because the latter type of problems are more interesting, but in actual games the proverb will apply in the majority of the cases.
