BQM 150/ Discussion

Velobici: JuhoP is indeed correct. Essential Joseki diagram 10 has the one space high pincer. My error. My apologies to all who may have lost time and effort due to this error.

Perhaps we can convert this error into a feature (does my computer background shine through?) by making the page describe the advantages/disadvantages of the 3-3 invasion when there is a one-space low pincer vis-a-vis a one-space high pincer.

Diagram 10 (corrected)

Essential Joseki:Diagram 10 (Contradiction). Blocking on this side with W3 is a big mistake in direction. When black jumps out to B10, his corner is very big. According to theory, White should make a defensive move at a, but that makes her overconcentrated; if she does not defend, then her shape is not quite clean. So there is some contradiction in white's plans. .

Note: Diagram rotated 90 degrees and colors in both the diagram and text reversed to match the diagram above.

Basic Variation 1

Regarding the one space low pincer, Essential Joseki page 163 says:

Essential Joseki:Basic Variation 1 (One-space low pincer). Usually white adopts a pincer attack when black makes a low approach. The primary intent of the one-space low pincer of white 1 is to net let black play elsewhere, forcing him to immediately invade the corner. Then white can seal him in and get outside influence.

Note: Diagram rotated 90 degrees and colors in both the diagram and text reversed to match the diagram above.

Very different meaning.
