Shugen
Honinbo Shugen (本因坊 秀元), a.k.a. Tsuchiya Momosaburo 土屋 百三郎, (1854–1917) was the youngest son of Honinbo Shuwa. He became the sixteenth & twentieth head of the Honinbo house.
Shugen became the sixteenth head of the Honinbo house after his eldest brother's (Shuetsu) mental breakdown in 1879—thus changing his name from Tsuchiya Momosaburo to Honinbo Shugen. In 1884 Shugen passed headship to his elder brother Shuei.
After Shuei passed away in 1907 he took temporary control as the twentieth head, while Tamura Yasuhisa and Karigane Junichi fought over who Shuei had intended to continue as heir. In 1908, Shugen resigned the Honinbo title in favour of Tamura, the strongest player. Thus Tamura became the 21st (and last) hereditary Honinbo, taking the name Shusai.
