Reiwa

The Reiwa period, or Reiwa era, (Japanese: 令和時代 Hepburn: Reiwa jidai) is the current era in Japan, beginning on May 1, 2019, the day after the abdication of the Emperor Akihito. His son, the 126th Emperor Naruhito, acceded to the throne; and in accordance with Japanese customs, Akihito will be posthumously renamed the 125th "Emperor Heisei." It was preceded by the Heisei.

Following Japanese custom, the starting date of the Reiwa period corresponds to Reiwa 1 (令和元年 = Reiwa gannen, where gannen means "first year").
