Go programs on Japanese TV

There are several Go programs on TV in Japan. They can be divided into:

  • Programs on regular TV channels
  • Programs on satellite TV channels
  • The Igo/Shogi channel (on satellite TV)

Programs on regular TV channels

  • The NHK Sunday Go Program (Igo no jikan) on NHK Education (channel 3) at 1200 to 1400 on Sundays. The program has two parts: The NHK Lecture for 20 minutes, followed by the NHK Cup. The prime time slot, following the shogi program from 1000-1200 shows how popular Go is in Japan
  • There used to be a program on TV Tokyo (channel 12) at 0545 to 0615 on Sundays. This has now been discontinued after 36 years. I think the reason is JAL cutting back on sponsorship. So these titles may have ended. The time and format changed in April 2003. It used to be 0600-0645 showing several tournaments during the year: The Hayago Senshuken has turned into a new tournament called JAL Super Hayago. The time limits changed from 30 seconds per move to 10 seconds per move, still with 10 periods of longer thinking time (1 minute?)

April to October: JAL Super Hayago
October to January: JAL Ladies Hayago
January to March: JAL Shin'ei Hayago

  • NHK satellite channel (BS2) has a weekly news program for Go and shogi on Saturday at 12:10 called Igo-Shogi Journal
