A different variation

antic: My opponent played B3. How should White play now? I played a.

Bob McGuigan: B3 is a bit slow. I think White b is a good response since it makes a good relationship with the white+circle stone. If Black cuts at a his pincer stone will be hurt. White a in response to B3 seems heavy to me since Black b would separate the white stones into two weak groups.

This is bad for Black

White's follow-up is too good.

White ends up with good shape on the outside and the black+circle stone is blighted. Admittedly white+circle is captured and Black has a nice endgame move at a, but Black's development in this area is done. These seven black stones will have a very limited role in the rest of the game while White's stones have a future.

Its a level indicator? to learn to prefer influence in the opening over a moderate amount of territory. I could be all wrong here. This is an area that I am exploring. Seems to be a rule of thumb that 19 points (15 in this example. 19 in a famous hamete) are not enough territory to compensate for the influence created.
