This invasion has been showing up a lot on KGS at low double digit to high single digit kyu
There's a favorable ko, or you can force it to live small and get a very thick wall on the outside. There could be more variations but in all cases the general idea is black's happy with the result: white gets few points and black gets a wall. AI suggests 3-3 invading the kosumi enclosure is locally a 3 point loss - so possible at a 10k level, but not really joseki.
Suppose black just connects and doesn't want to fight it. Then the corner's not alive, right, black can easily reduce its eyespace? Unfortunately, black has a weakness they need to defend. The circled point would connect everything up instead.
The other variation is pretty simple and starts with a connection, giving you a strong wall. I see two main variations, although more stuff could work if white has something on the outside in the right place. Most of the moves here seem natural so should be easy to memorize.
In this first variation, B0 could maybe be omitted depending on the local and ladder situation. You can handle the clamp as shown in the second diagram but it seems very uncomfortable depending on the side situations. Probably safe to just protect the cut.
Another variation where black descends, white follows, and black tries to kill. This is more complicated and likely still favorable for black, since white's 3-3 invasion here isn't particularly good in the first place. The general idea is white makes the 1-5 eye-making move sente.
This comment is not related to the diagram at left, I just can't find how to get a paragraph below a preceding diagram? Also, if white makes an empty triangle instead, there's tons of variations, I think these are mostly bad for white though. Something similar to the ko is possible.
And yes, your suggestion of black hanes below for is not too good:
I'll just add a few comments on mindset. These "simple" corner positions can get surprisingly complicated, and you can tie yourself in knots...
You need to suppress any voices in the back of your head saying "That's a mistake and now I must kill everything". Yes, the invasion here isn't a good move, but it's not a game-losing mistake either. If you try too hard to punish the mistake, you can end up making worse mistakes of your own.
Remember that living in ko isn't always a success. Winning a ko means ignoring a ko threat. They pay for it in a different part of the board. And you don't need to start the ko right away either; you can wait for a favourable time.
Remember too that living small in the corner isn't always a success. Depending on the rest of the board, the outside walls can be worth a lot more than the corner territory. So feel good about sealing them in and making the nice walls. It would have been better to reduce from the outside rather than invade.
Note to self: the page at 4435 enclosure is both untidy and misleading. We should fix that some time :-)
