ukeru (受ける) is a Japanese term. In go it means to answer an opponent's move or to defend in a responsive fashion. The sense of preventive defense is conveyed by mamoru.

It can mean `receive` in a similar sense to receiving a visitor. Do you give the opponent a warm welcome or a hostile reception when they play near your stones? The word implies more than simply responding: it seems, to me at least, to refer to the manner of response. -- Tamsin
