Bill: What if Black does not reply in the bottom left corner, but plays on the top side instead? E. g., B9 instead of B8.

Arno: if Black plays B8 at W9 then White answers with W9 at B8. Mutual damage. Eventually either Black answers on the lower left, or White connects to white+circle then answers Black's play at the top. In both cases W+1.
