(Sebastian:) What do you think about using instead of ? This looks more like a potential stone. Or would you rather reserve this for another case such as "black stone or empty" or "black or white stone" (if that ever occurs)?
Bill: My preference would be to use a ?, but it does not show up. at least covers the point. Who knows what's under there? ;-) looks to me like a marked, empty point. Maybe x for unknown is good. :-)
(Sebastian:) I just entered it as a wish in Guinea Pigs Feedback, but I'm getting second thoughts. Usually, the "?" is used for a bad move - couldn't that lead to confusion sometime later, when SL may support that? I also have second thoughts about the "x". This would lend itself (paired up with "o") for the meaning "black stone or empty". Anyway, no need to reply, let's see what becomes of the wish.

Unfortunately, this seems to work only in preview mode, and only when the area of interest is symmetrical since the display automatically centers.
