Solution

[Diagram]
Solution

The solution is to make a clamp at B1, threatening both a snapback at a as well as connecting underneath at b. Note that after B1, White at c or d would be self-atari.

[Diagram]
Solution

If W2 defends the snapback, then W3 captures, easy-peasy.

Solution

W2 may also descend here or play at a or b, but B3 can make a snapback on the six White stones.

[Diagram]
Inferior

W2 may be answered by making an atari at B3 to win, but it is less efficient and gives White more ko threats. After W6 captures two stones, both Black and White has two liberties each...

Inferior (continued)

B7 wins the capturing race by one move.

Failure

[Diagram]
Failure

The atari at B1 is wrong. When White plays the hane at W6, Black is stuck and is unable to make an approach move at a, which is a self-atari.

Note that although B1 is wrong, this failure diagram merits additional discussion. See Kyu Exercise 12 for more.

Failure

The hane at B1 is also a mistake, because W2 can make an eye. After B3, W4 prevents an eye for Black. Just as the previous failure, Black loses by eye versus no eye.
