My question is about the status of the white group, . I read it as undecided, and thus expected to grab a second eye with a. It seems easy to kill. To kill it would yield a sure win for black, yet black did not play to kill and white did not play to live. So both pros seem to agree that is unconditionally living. Please help me to see this.

Now a and b are miai, keeping white from taking an eye in the center. And prevents white from taking an eye on the edge.

What am I missing? Thanks for any help you can provide!
