I don't think this criticism holds much water. I've taught lots of people using area counting and they all seem to get it when I explain that playing unnecessary moves inside their own territory (e.g. dividing a 4 in a row big eye into 2 eyes or explicitly capturing stones that are clearly dead) when they could be taking an unclaimed area of the board is almost the same as passing.
