What are the pros and cons of slotted boards vs folding?
Bob McGuigan: Some points: (1) Many folding boards have a slightly raised area at the fold, so they don't lie flat on a table. (2) It is much easier to pick up a slotted board with stones on it without disturbing the stones. (3) Slotted boards have to be put together before playing and taken apart afterwards if you plan to transport them, while folding boards just need to be (un)folded. Sometimes it requires some strength to close the two parts of the slotted board together or to take them apart. On the whole I prefer slotted boards. They are usually more rigid.
Another possibility would be a magnetic board. I don't mean the wholy magnetic, but a wooden board in two pieces joined by a magnetic strip. A friend of mine has a board like this. The only problem with this board is that it is a bit harder to move as a whole. the upside is that it is easy and there is no bump in the middle like there sometimes is with folding and slotted boards.
I am a bit doubtfull of boards that are joined together by a magnetic strip... Do they really work well? Why would it be less bumpy in the middle of the board then a slotted board?
I'd also like to know if slotted boards have any weaknesses other than being a bit more difficult to put together and take apart.
