ChiyoDad: PDF created from shygost's Lesson 03 (2006-01-31 16:00) [#973]

Gilles Arcas showed me that it is possible to modify the transcription SGFs so that they can be exported into the Adobe Portable Document File format (aka PDF) using Drago.

nannyogg has kindly provided space on her website to host [ext] the 1MB PDF of Lesson 03 which Gilles created. It came to 33 pages, even with a layout of about 4 diagrams per page. You can view/download it from that link.

This would be helpful to those who prefer to study away from their computers. They can now print the transcripts.

The method for modifying these SGFs can be found on [ext] my blog.

Whow! this looks super!

I hope I can learn this method to produce study/teaching material. I just flew over it (1 min) and think that text & moves of diagrams 23-24 could be changed.
Fig. 23: cutting point N5 is important, hence would White play W4 like this ? (or W4=M5 or so?)

Still white get's something (not nothing) and that is strength of a stable shape, position.
It is only that the other variants seem better for white ...

Fig. 23: same problem cutting point: perhaps it's also good shape to defend it with W4=M6? (cf. figures 28 ff). One might have to sacrifice after the cutting stone but gets a squeeze.

I just saw that shygost is teaching 3 dans, so consider my comments as legitimate questions.

"The method for modifying these SGFs can be found on my blog. " Are there programs for the conversion? asks a lazy one.

Yes. When I first saw Drago's print capabilities [ext] back in July 2005, I thought it would be an excellent tool for reviewing games and their commentary offline.

This SGF patch procedure now makes it possible to use Drago as a lesson publishing tool. Clubs or other organizations could use it to create lesson booklets and print them out (or distribute them over the internet).

If you have ideas for Gilles, you can add them to the Drago Wish List.

CORRECTION: Drago's current and upcoming version do not yet have a direct-to-PDF export capability. It does currently have a direct-to-RTF export capability.

In the meantime, one can use any of the freeware [ext] print-to-PDF drivers and apps that are available for download.

Dear Chiyodad,

Lin&Junedad asks:

'Would you know a program which converts the semicolons ";" into the [B], resp. makes the SGF file ready for Drago?"

I have no problem converting the RTF to PDF, thank you for those freeware links.

ChiyoDad: Re: PDF created from shygost's Lesson 03 (2006-02-02 00:39) [#979]

I don't know of one so there are two options (neither of which is mutually exclusive):

  1. Use an editor with a SEARCH & REPLACE function.
  2. Manually edit the file in a text editor.

sduff has expressed his intention to incorporate this change in forthcoming transcriptions. I believe that means we would only need to see conversions made to Lessons 1, 2, 4 and 5. If you choose to make this effort, please forward your modified file(s) to sduff so they can be added to the website. Please extend to him any assistance you can.

Being a general unix sort of guy, I don't get into the Windows applications very often. However I *do* have webspace if someone wanted to send me PDFs of the conversions of the lessons. Just let me know. remillard at gmail dot com

If you don't mind the typing there is an EXCELLENT TeX-system for rendering sgf-data called sgf2tex.

If you're comfortable with that sort of tool you can do a lot of cool things.

Remillard, I'll be uploading PDF versions of the existing lessons to [ext] http://tengen.bur.st in the next few days.

MultiGo has a nice printing facility which I'll be using, and I've already got a PDF Printer Driver on my machine. I'll look at Drago if MultiGo doesn't work out.

Great. Just didn't know if the size was going to be an issue, so I thought I'd make the offer.

is it just me - how to explain the H5 stone appearing out of nowhere starting with diagram 85 and pertaining up to the end?

GillesArcas: Shygost lesson 3 sgf fix required (2007-01-03 17:10) [#2897]

In the sgf file, the stone H5 is set in a variation but not erased when coming back to the main line. If you are interested in fixed sgf or pdf, let me know.

I'd like that lot. Not especially for me personally, as I've already worked through this lesson. So its more a general quality issue, depending on how easy this can be acomplished :-)

I found lots of other mistakes in the text regarding denoted coordinates, maybe these should be fixed as well. I'll try to make a list.

GillesArcas: sgf update request for sduff (2007-01-05 20:35) [#2930]

As I understand, the shygost's lesson sgf files are maintained by sduff at [ext] http://tengen.bur.st. The best thing should be to transmit all fixes to him, but I don't know how to contact him if he doesn't answer to the present request! Once the sgf updated, converting to pdf is immediate.
