Does anyone have any alternative name for the terms Capture and Take? They sound a bit non-pc to me?

Perhaps we could use retire instead.

When B1 was played, four stones of the other colour were retired.

I still have problems when foreigners say in English "I eat you." :)

Good idea, and while we're at it, black and white should be coloured and non-coloured, really. And groups don't die, which could frighten children off, they just go on a long vacation.

cheeky devils ;-p

No I was simply thinking about how I explained terms to an 8 year old if he asked "What does that mean?" I couldn't quite reconcile open skirt with somethin entirely clean - I was thinking about skirting boards for a bit, but that didn't ring true to me. If it is nothing to do with skirts I am happy to use it.

And if "open skirt" is too suggestive for you, what about "exposed bottom" as has also been suggested?

My treatment of that suggestion was seated in contempt. :-)

why not use open door ? that way you can talk about closing the doors of a house at night to deter unauthorized access, or closing the doors of a car before driving.

if the issue is looking for a child-friendly term, then why not say so, rather than this PC-stuff ?

the open skirt term appears to be a translation from Japanese. whereas the two Chinese professionals I have heard/seen lecture on weiqi use the term open door.

you can talk about the skirt of a long winter coat. when the skirt of a long winter coat is open, the wind lifts the skirt and chills ones legs. that would give you a lead into discussing the difference between coat and jacket.

hmmm...what will you do when they ask about kilts, i wonder, says the father of five children.

How are "capture" and "take" non-pc? How are they bad for children?

Some people want children to live in a strange world in which people never die, illness never happens, and everything is always wonderful. This says more about their own fears than anything that bothers the children. What children do best at is hearing that despite the reality of death, illness, and unpleasantness, life can still be a very good thing.

I think this thread was intended as an ironic jab at the other thread about the PC-ness of lack thereof of the term "open skirt." No one really thinks that "capture" and "take" are non-PC.

Coyote: How about skirt? (2006-01-18 21:10) [#926]

It seems to me, in the context of attack and defense, in the tradition of samuri playing the game, "skirt" refers to armour, not women's clothing.

Besides, can an 8 year old not handle the idea of an open skirt as women's clothing.

"What do they mean by open skirt Dad? Like the skirt's Mom wears?"

"Yes, you're Mom wouldn't want to walk around with her skirt open on the side. She'd get cold and people would see her underwear."

"I don't want people to see my underwear!"

"Then don't leave your skirt open, Son."

How is that not PG?
