If the black group has two outside liberties, White's best way towards the ko is to hane before playing on the vital 2-2 point.


This is not quite correct (see below) :-) Use GoTools for this kind of analysis

Black can also turn at 2, in which case White needs to continue at the 3-2 point.

Basic attack  

The basic attack only produces a three move approach ko that is harder for White to win.


In fact, after 2, Black dies without ko, like this :

In All About Life and Death it says that this approach is correct for zero or one outside liberties.

The same approach will also create a ko when there are two outside liberties. What are the advantages (apart from maximising the chances of a mistake) to the other patterns discussed?
