To me, "junk" implies no value whatsoever. Kikashi stones do not have no value! Part of the kikashi is the latent aji in having the kikashi stones still on the board. If they don't turn out to be conveniently useful eventually, fine, but being able to use kikashi stone aji later is a key reason for playing kikashi.
