2a02:a03f:ea5e:1b00: on the bad practice of referring to pages outside Sensei's Library (2022-01-14 11:53) [#11999]

Undoubtly well meant, but it is bad practice to refer to pages that lie outside the wiki, because such pages might (1) be changed at will, and (2) disappear suddenly (which happens quite frequently on nowaday's Internet).

Such external pages should be converted to proper wiki pages ASAP (if it doesn't already exist).

This practice is also condemned on e.g. `stackoverflow`.

Several well known users on SL make this mistake; this practice should be stopped as it weakens the value of SL.

(One can ask the question: what is the value of SL if everything is stored in external pages...)

A template (see ListOfTemplates) should be developed to mark pages that refer to outside content.

Personally I consider this practice a way to hijack SL, to draw the attention outside SL and towards one's own projects.

axd: examples of what can go wrong when referring to outside content (2022-01-14 13:18) [#12001]

A good example can be found here: PassFight refers to [ext] http://home.snafu.de/jasiek/j1997.html (so this is a first example of a reference to a page outside SL).

On that page, references are made to defunct pages [ext] http://www01.tjsys.co.jp/WWGo/free/rule.htm as well as [ext] http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~wjh/go/rules/NihonKiin.html: examples of what can happen when one refers to external content.

Ironically, one of those defunct pages is hosted by the same person that hosts [ext] https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~wjh/go/rules/Japanese.html ...

There is a problem that most such outside content is copyrighted, and as such cannot be copied to SL without the permission of the owner, including the permission that that copying also entails releasing the material under the Open Content License.
