yuzukitea: Questioning the reading of her name (2021-08-18 02:08) [#11817]

I have a feeling that her name is mistranslated.

In kanji: 豊田源

源 has multiple readings (unfortunately). "Gen" is typically a surname in Japanese and not a given name. A more typical female given name (written in the exact same way) would be Hajime, Sachie, Sachiko, Minato, etc.

...It's actually really hard to know how it was read without seeing the hiragana. Would be better to ask someone who knows Japanese.

(Sebastian:) yuzukitea makes a good remark about the given name - but what about the family name? Is “Toyota” even a family name? I only know it as the artificially chosen brand of the car manufacturer - whose founder's name was “Toyoda” originally (as described [ext] here). They did keep the kanji writing 豊田, though, so it's possible that nowadays someone with the family name 豊田 may prefer to pronounce the name with “t”.
