This page uses the term "internal liberties" in a non-standard, probably wrong, way to mean "total number of moves needed to capture".

One of the standard meanings of liberty is move to capture. In fact, that sense is probably used more often than the dame sense. (Often the two are the same, OC.)

squared four's internal liberties are 5? can't believe. please add an explanation. i see only 4 liberties.

The liberty count is about how many plays it takes to capture a group with an eye of a certain size and shape.
