Harleqin: Regarding: Useful Phrases In Useless Languages (2005-10-27 17:13) [#254]

I am not sure of those klingon phrases. While perhaps grammatically correct, they are very untypical of the klingon attitude. At the start of a game, the most I'd expect from a klingon is "Qapla'!" (success!) but more likely just "Quj!" (play!, the imperative prefix is often omitted in colloquial klingon). The art of klingon resignation is also most likely of a strictly nonverbial nature...

Those sentences are grammatically correct, that's for sure.

they are very untypical of the klingon attitude.

Why? What doesn't fit you? Take into account the concepts of "batlh" and "quv".

At the start of a game, the most I'd expect from a klingon is "Qapla'!" (success!) but more likely just "Quj!" (play!, the imperative prefix is often omitted in colloquial klingon).

The only point I agree is regarding the imperative prefix in Clipped Klingon. For more details about Klingon attitude and warfare I suggest you to take a look at the book "Klingon for the Galactic Traveller", pages 46-49.

The art of klingon resignation is also most likely of a strictly nonverbial nature...

Note that one shouldn't assume that the Klingon speaker will actually be Klingon. Therefore there is still a need to know word for resignation

I find it very unlikely that a klingon speaker will in fact be klingon. ROFL

axd: esperanto? (2008-01-17 01:14) [#4211]

I'm afraid I don't get the humour behind the esperanto section, and would very much ask whoever put it on this page to remove or defend that section.

Concerning the other languages, a link to some more explanatory web page is always added value :-)

What don't you get?

Its a site for translation of those prases into useless made-up languages.

Esperanto is a useless made-up language and thus deserves to be on the list.

Dont get me wrong, the idea behind Esperanto is fine. It is only useless because so few speaks it. The more people knows a language, the more will want to learn it. Like it or not english has won the battle to become the international language. Its kinda like the resent battle between Blu-ray and HD-DVD.

tapir: Re: esperanto? (2008-05-30 00:39) [#4720]

There are more people in the world speaking Esperanto than you will talk with during your whole life, Tas and certainly more than a lot of "natural" languages which I don't dare to call useless because they have only few speakers. The offensive aji of this page is mostly due to the "useless" before languages. I vote for renaming or deleting this page.

Let me point out that English is the first language mentioned on that page. If we can accept that the other languages on this page are no less useless than English, then maybe we can enjoy the humour with a light touch, and without going out of our way to pointedly insult anyone. Let's not turn this into a flame war.

Maybe there is a case for moving the Esperanto section to Useful phrases in other languages. I don't know enough Esperanto to be able to tell whether the content is in fact humourous.
