This position appears in the 10th game of a Jubango match played in 1861, Honinbo Shusaku 7 dan (White) vs. Murase Shuho 5 dan (Black). In the game, Black has captured the White corner. White may have deliberately sacrificed the corner in view of the whole board position. However, Black eventually won this game by resignation.

This position has become a common one in life-and-death problem collections.
