GokyoShumyoSection4Problem14/Attempts

Karl Knechtel: Not completely sure I haven't made any mistakes... this problem reminds me of some joseki I've seen, though.

[Diagram]
White to win the capturing race

W7 at 1, B8 captures. If B8 takes an outside liberty, W9 captures the two stones in the corner, and the others are in atari.

W1 is essential, anyway, because anything else lets Black live in the corner by capturing the stone (making one eye from the capture and the other at the 1-1 point). If B2 at 5, W3 at 2 is easily seen to win. If B4 at 5, W5 at 9 is atari, and Black is still behind in the race after capturing the two stones.

Attempt 2 (failure)

If White makes the mistake of forcing with W3, then Black can win the capturing race.
