The marked white stone is missing in the problem diagram, but present in the solution diagram. In my opinion, it should be present in both, rather than absent in both.
Here is the book's solution
Black lives by setting up the comb formation. This is possible because Black's move threatens to capture the 4 Black stones on the left.
It seems to me that White can defend his left 4 stones by playing a typical sacrifice in capturing races, gaining one move
Now Black can't throw in and atari, due to a shortage of liberties, and has to spend an extra move to capture .
I don't see any better result for Black.
