Capturing Race Exercise 13 / Solution

Solution

[Diagram]
B1 is the key move...

B1 threatens to make life in the corner, forcing W2. An extra approach move is necessary to capture black+circle giving black time to capture the white stones on the outside.

[Diagram]
Filling inside first doesn't work for white either

If white tries to fill inside first with W4, black captures leaving a 3-space big eye to fill. W4 or W6 at B7 has the same result.

Failure

B1 here looks like it does the same thing, but actually invites ko. Black doesn't have time to play B5 at W6 to prevent the ko - that will lose the race outright.

Failure

If B1 simply reduces White's liberties, W2 and W4 can turn the corner into a ko.

Failure

Although B1 makes a squared four, it does not have five inside liberties, since big eyes can be small in the corner. Instead, it has only three inside liberties, so White wins the capturing race.
