Solution

Solution

It is important to atari the white+circle stone in the correct direction.

If W4 here, then after B5, the W4 stone is captured.

Variation

This is even easier for Black.

Variation

W2 here is a trick move, but after B3, White is still dead.

Failure

Failure

The play from the other direction is a failure. White lives due to double shortage of liberties.

Under the stones - wishful thinking

Players who know the under the stones technique may be tempted to think of this more convoluted solution. However, this line is wishful thinking and does not quite work.

For details on why this sequence is a failure, please refer to the solution of Under The Stones Problem 6. (Do note that Under The Stones Problem 6 is not a beginner exercise.)
