After , the white eyespace looks like a bulky five - Black strikes straight at it.

2-1 is often but not always vital  

White can't play at a because of shortage of liberties.

Failure again  

Black a and b are miai for the kill.

Isn't Black able to descend on the left to destroy eyespace? If White blocks, there's a snapback, if not then Black connects and the eye is gone... If White takes the corner point, it starts a ko for life.
