Bill: Calling these patterns joseki is a bit strange. B2 is a play that depends on circumstances, so we are already out of joseki territory.

unkx80: In Chinese joseki literature, I frequently see the term 场合定式, which can be roughly translated to "circumstancial joseki". The idea is, in the circumstances, there is already a fixed sequence of moves, but the results may favour one player locally, but may be acceptable to both players based on the whole board configuration.

Bill: I think that's what the Japanese refer to as baai no te, a play that depends upon circumstances.


Bill: Since a footsweep is not a block, maybe we should move this material to the alias and delete this page.
