I do not see how the example meets the definition. It would also be interesting to know what Takagi actually said in Japanese.
I don't know what phrase Takagi used, only that the translator used "makeshift".
If we assume it was "maniawase", and take into account Hane's use of the word, then the Kobayashi example makes sense, because even though he did settle the top right, he left behind some defects nearby.
