Just saw this board. I think it looks very nice. Has anyone had any experience with it?
Bob McGuigan: It may be obvious but I think it should be pointed out that this board is not "standard" size, and the stones are small, too. A standard Japanese style board is around 16" by 18" and the stones are around 21mm to 22mm in diameter. So you couldn't use this board with a different set of stones nor could you easily use these stones with a different board. As for portability, this board would fit better than a standard one would in a backpack or briefcase.
There are two things I dont like about the board:
1. the points on the edge of the 19x19 playing grid have one type of wood on the inside and another type of wood on the outside. this makes it appear as if you should play in the spaces rather than on the intersections.
2. the playing surface of the board is exposed when the board is folded, rather than the playing surface being hidden and protected.
There are hidden hinges with 180 degrees of rotation. These are not infrequently found on fine furniture. There is also the mortise and tenon method of securing the two halves of the board. This method is quite nice as padding may be placed between the two playing surfaces while the board is stored.
