What do you prefer? Older pro games or more recent ones? I like games from the 60-70-80 period best. I seem to understand better what is going on, compared to the newer games where violent fighting errupts sooner. Probably partly because I have my knowledge from translated Japanese books from this period. I kinda like the nice 'shapy, Japenese oldschool style', like Otake and Takagawa.

Older games, from the Shusaku area are nice as well but the komi makes a big difference, black played a lot more for cash territory.

Would you say that modern games are better to study cause the joseki are more up to date and the game has evolved? On the other hand it is not like the old style of play is not valid any more on amateur level, even on pro level the difference would be relatively minimal I think.

What I keep hearing is to study games that you enjoy. Janice Kim recommends to pick a set of games and study those--whatever they happen to be.

I personally get more enjoyment out of modern Korean games, and so that's what I study. Some people find older games easier to comprend, easier to memorize, or find that they simply prefer games that do not look like someone decided to throw a kifu into a blender ^_^

At a kyu level, I would argue that the difference between "modern jeongseok" and something that was played in Shusaku's day isn't important.

When I look at recent games (about 1995 onwards) I often find them exciting, but incomprehensible. I think I need to spend a lot of time studying some older games first. And probably I need to get a lot stronger too!
