ThorAvaTahr: jubango warrants its own page? (2014-02-20 10:25) [#9961]

Hi

I am curious about the ten-game-match. Specifically the rules. In my vocabulary I associate the word Jubango with the traditional Japanese handicap rules. As this word is widely used to describe the ten-game match between Li and Se-Tol, I wonder if they will change handicap after a series of wins (removing the komi as a first step). I guess they won't.

Are there any other specifics to be known about this match.

They won't change handicaps. It would be very uncommon too for top pros to give or take a stone. If you know they battle for 2 points as early as in the opening, giving away 6,5 points would be seen as a recipe for resignation. If their relative strength is unknown, such a difference might be feasible, but tied at 17 it's unlikely one may force the other to a stone difference consistently.

As for the usage of jubango, I personally prefer 10 game match too, but it seems like the term has gained critical mass in being used as an alias for that.

I am quite aware handicap is uncommon in pro-games.

However, as people call this a jubango, the association with the jubango's of the 50-ies is easily made. In that time komi was net yet so common, but be sure they also fought for 2 points in the opening.

They used the traditional Japanese handicap system. In fact many where prematurely ended to save the face of the player who was beaten down to take higher handicap. It would be spectacular (although highly unlikely) if that would happen in this match as well.

What about: - rule-set used - time-settings - locations and how they are chosen (tibet?, why only 1 in korea?) - etc.

I agree with people who don't like using the term jubango for this ten game match, especially when neither player is from Japan and, as far as I know, no games will be played in Japan. I think maybe the term jubango was used to try to suggest that this match is like the ten game matches played by Go Seigen in the previous century. Maybe there is a suggestion that one of the players could be like Go Seigen. I don't think that is conceivable. Go Seigen's stature in the go world depends on a lot more than just winning matches against other top players and I don't see either Lee or Gu having that sort of stature. I think this match is mostly a publicity stunt by the sponsoring company.

Furthermore, the fact that the games are played with komi makes a big difference with the Go Seigen matches. For one thing, in the non-komi case there was a lot more at stake than just money. I really think that whichever player loses it will have little importance, except for money.
