Sebastian: Youth book: QiHun (棋魂) (2011-06-07 07:15) [#8556]

I got a copy of QiHun? (棋魂), a 350 page novel, which features a boy who is pushed to Go by a go loving spirit. It gives 曹志林 (Cao Zhilin) as the author and 徐喆 (Xu Zhe) as the graphic artist. [ext] This review calls it "China's first go hero novel".

It seems similar to Hikaru no Go, but since I only very cursorily looked at the latter many years ago, and only started reading QiHun now, I'm not sure how close the two are. I do remember that Sai was in a go board, while QiHun was in a flute ([ext]). When he first plays, the boy gets ridiculed for not holding the stones between the index and middle finger, which I seem to remember from Hikaru, too. Does anyone know both and can compare them?

It appears from this Chinese Wikipedia page ([ext] http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%A3%8B%E9%AD%82) that QiHun? is the Chinese translation of Hikaru no Go "《棋魂》(《棋靈王》,日语:ヒカルの碁,...." Note the copyright information (in English) there.

Yes, that's what I thought first too. Even the page with the review has "ヒカルの碁" side by side with "棋魂" in the title. However, the review itself seems to say that it's a coincidence. If I translate the second paragraph correctly, it says: "Speaking of this book, people's first impression is Japan's manga of the same name "QiHun (go spirit)". But Cao Zhilin told the correspondent that in Japan, the Japanese cartoon of the same name has the official name "Go of the Light", while China uses the official name "Go goblin king", therefore his "QiHun (go spirit)" is the authentic one." Well, that's pretty confusing!

Hmmmm, which paragraph is that ? Can you cut-n-paste the first few words of the paragraph. Not good at regular chinese characters...have been learning simplified. The second sentence (作者是堀田由美(ほったゆみ),漫畫由小畑健繪製,並由日本棋院的女棋士梅澤由香里擔當監修,單行本全23卷。) seems to say that the author is 堀田由美 (Hotta Yumi), the mangaka(?) is 小畑健 (Obata Takeshi), advised(?) by 梅澤由香里 (Umezawa Yukari), and that there are 23 volumes.

Pretty sure that QiHun? is Hikaru no Go. Took a photo of the box containing my three volume set this morning. You can see the photo at [ext] http://bresler.dyndns.org/Go/Photos/QiHun.jpg

Oh, there's a misunderstanding. You're talking about the Wikipedia page; I'm talking about the review ([ext] http://www.gamebase.com.tw/forum/50006/topic/51091155/1). The paragraph begins with "说起这本书". BTW, are you aware that in Wikipedia, you can change the display to simplified Chinese? The third tab should say something like "不轉換"; when you click on the down arrowhead next to it, it should offer you a number of option for different writing systems.
