Bob McGuigan: It is an oversimplification but the probe is generally played because White wants Black to choose between inside territory in the corner and outside influence. Black makes the choice based on the overall position. If Black plays tenuki then he is allowing White to make the choice and White will choose the option that interferes most with Black's position. For example, if Black has little potential for using outside influence, White will take the corner territory.
