...I'm somewhat responsible by starting the currently? page.
This template makes editing more difficult, for the same result on the page. With the only effect of having a list (which shows the year of outdated information). This is quite similar to the Wikipedia (link) template I made in January on axd's request (no effect but list generating for update/control) and deleted after some month of irrelevance and non-use.
Is this so much better than {{update}}? Actually we have dozens of outdated pages, I doubt classifying them by the degree of outdatedness is a major step forward.

My reasoning here was that the update template is for pages that need regular updating, whereas the as of template is for a single piece of information that will need a one time update at an unknown time in the future. For example:
So I think that editors should avoid the word "currently" completely, but that "as of" has a very legitimate use for information that is current now, but will in the future need to be updated (when it is finalized). So if the second sentence above had been present on SL, it might at some point have been updated to the third one. Specifically, when Lee Changho was no longer considered the strongest. At that time, someone might have updated the Lee Sedol article to read "is considered the strongest player in the world as of 2002". And in the future, if that title is passed to for example Gu Li, that might be updated to "was considered the strongest player in the world in the 2002-2009 period".
Wikipedia has a similar guideline: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:As_of
I think its intention is good.
I use {{update}} for everything which needs an update. For pages needing regular update I made the subpage Tapir/PagesThatNeedRegularUpdate?.

Yes, but the update template is only for pages that are outdated now. The as of template is for pages that are current, but will be become outdated at some point in the future. The update template is intrusive, because it creates a banner. This is good, because it gives editors an incentive to fix the page. But then there should be something to fix, so if the information is still current, the banner is wrong.
I got the difference now. Still I have doubts whether this approach will fulfil its promises. (Just try to imagine the effort to add this templates vs. the effort we can't / don't bother to make on other issues)
Yes, that is an ongoing problem :-(
It will probably be hard to get people to use it. And also hard to get people to update pages when needed. Still, the template is non-intrusive, so even if it is used but nobody bothers to update the page, then at least the page will still look fine.
Maybe list on List of Templates to let people know it exists?
I started a page LatestPromotions lately. Together with GoNews the major maintenance work (titles, promotions, and even new pros) will be done "naturally" while updating them - without creating an extra-effort like "add 100 templates today". If we can gather some people around those pages it may actually work. (GoNews needs the bigger effort.)
