Funkybside 4k*: A thought just crossed my mind, what do you think of the following statement?

Mastering sente is mastering the art of playing moves you actually prefer your opponent dosen't answer!

It seems to capture what I think of sente; however, maybe some bright go player could point out falws in this logic. I'm interested in what the go community thinks about this.

Well, there are times when you make a play that is locally sente and you would prefer for your opponent to answer it. The most common example is a ko threat, but there are others.

This does not include the concept of "having sente". Also, to my eyes at least, the definition seems confusing. Implicit in the rules of go is the statement that is CAN be ignored so there is no need to explcitly state that possibility. Much less confusing then is to state that playing sente is playing a move "which requires an answer" with the obvious understanding that to ignore would be deterimental.

Velobici: It appears to be an attempt to formulate a restate a familiar concept in a novel manner hoping to thereby stimulate thought, perhaps even a new manner of viewing the familiar. See John Fowles [ext] __The Magus__.

Peterius?: I was thinking maybe the Sente page should be changed a bit in wording. It gives the wrong impression to beginners about sente; an impression that confused me for a long time.

There are no moves that are strictly sente or non sente. Instead, I would claim that sente is more about either playing a move as close to the most efficient possible move or about playing a move that is not the most efficient but that your opponent is tricked into answering if he/she cannot see a more optimal move.

Like I feel that sente is the art of finding the move with the most value or about realizing that the move your opponent made did not have the most value and thus can be ignored until a later time. So if the game is a series of moves, each with decreasing value, Sente would have to do with people skipping ahead or just playing the very next move in the decreasing series.

If the move doesn't FORCE an answer, it is called gote (the opposite of sente). Example: You make an invasion into my territory. If I don't answer, your next move will cost me 50 points. If I do answer, I don't lose those 50 points, but you aren't forced to respond locally either -- you can make another great one-move invasion that forces my response. Therefore, while my moves are the most efficient possible (given the circumstances), your moves are definitely sente and mine are definitely gote.
