To me it almost seems like a practical joke, that somebody referst to the quality or property of being thick. But seriously, what is the exact meaning of the first usage of "thickness", and how does it contrast to the other usages of "thickness"?

I can clearly see the distinction between thickness in a local sense (second usage) and overall thickness (third usage), but to me and probably other readers the first usage is unclear.
