What is wrong with the current one? (I would prefer an older photograph from Wu as well.)

This is a classic photograph, it's much more beautiful than any modern offering I've seen.

I like the current photo better, showing him during a game.

would be difficult to recognize him from that black and white photo.

perhaps we should have both photos each with a caption noting what information we have on the location and date of the photos. Herman has added a couple photos for Go Seigen. Would it be good to order these in time from newest to oldest ?

I see no problem with having more photo's, although it would be nice if we could find a recent photo of him playing go. [ext] http://d4maths.lowtech.org/beijing/index.htm has a whole lot of pictures, but none of them show Tony playing go, unfortunately.

Of course, we should not go overboard. It's not like Tony Goddard is particularly famous or anything. It's a bit of a shame that there is so much dicussion over some relatively unknown British player, while at the same time there are dozens (if not hundreds) of articles about professional players that are completely without pictures :-(

The current order of pictures in Go Seigen was chosen for layout reasons. The photo of a young Go Seigen is somewhat large to go at the top. I do want to flesh out that article more, and maybe then there will be room to put them in chronological order.

Do you think it matters that much if people aren't able to recognize him? If you can find a good photo of him playing Go in a more modern era (post 2000), please go ahead and add that. Don't add something unatmospheric though. (Postscript) I am disappointed that the current photo was added, it's pretty poor.

It would be wonderful if there is a better photo, particularly of him playing go. Perhaps Ian Davis could obtain such a photo from Tony or person in the BGA ?

PeterHB: Better as it was (2009-01-23 17:00) [#5728]

In my opinion, the page was better as it was, so I have taken out the new photo. Yes its artistic judgement (and I could easily be wrong), but in this case, the first go playing photo is in keeping with the tone of a short biography. The more recent one isn't as good. Think about newspaper articles. The selection of picture is just as much part of making the article as the text. Most newspaper pieces on someone's activities in the 'serious' sections only have one picture, usually selected to be illustrative of the text in some way.

(I am a bit perplexed about the need to perhaps over-enthusiastically adjust an article about someone I, and perhaps some of the other editors too, have no personal knowledge of, and may not have heard of before a week a go. Perhaps over-enthusiastic adjustments might discourage people who do know Tony from expanding this article. An acorn seedling is easily crushed. An acorn seedling ignored may become a oak. )

Added a photo from the World Mind Sports Games showing Tony playing go. This is in addition to the photo that is 35 years old currently on the page.
