velobici: Submarine, Tent and Mt Fuji (2007-09-04 13:33) [#3878]

Bill asks if the submarine page should be tagged "humour", just as the tent and Mt Fuji pages have been tagged "humour". Tent and Mt Fuji were tagged "humour", since I've never before seen these two terms. Don't remember them occurring in any of my library of go books. Submarine, on the other hand, I have heard in a couple different go clubs. Don't remember an example of the term in a go book.

Perhaps a course of action is to move content to the susogakari page and mention on that page that some folks refer to the move using the English term submarine.

As far as I know all three are coined terms, first appearing on SL. I happen to like all three, and see nothing wrong with coining terms, as long as that is made clear. Let's not deceive people into thinking that a term is standard or established when it isn't.

From what velobici says, it appears that submarine is starting to catch on. Great! But let's not disparage other terms by labeling them as humor.

What I suggest is getting citations and examples for all go terms on SL. That's lexicography. Doing so will give us a good basis for our definitions, and help separate coined terms from standard terms. The go literature is extensive enough that it is difficult for any one person to do the research. So for terms that do not have citations, I suggest that on pages without citations or examples from the literature we put a request for readers to supply a citation and example of usage.

BobMyers: Mt. Fuji appeared in book by Kobayashi Satoru (2007-09-04 16:42) [#3880]

I added the Mt. Fuji page because it appears in a translation of a book by Kobayashi Satoru that came with a recent episode of the AGA e-Journal. I've never seen it myself before, haven't verified the original Japanese, and even then we might not know whether Kobayashi was using a semi-established term or making a kind of a joke.

For terms coined by the deshis here at Sensei's Library, perhaps we should label them as such. Dictionaries label words as slang, colloquial, dialect, etc. as appropriate. Perhaps we should make that clear with regard to our own local creations.
